What are peptides and what do they actually do?

Short answer
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids: the same building blocks as proteins, just much smaller. In the body they act as messengers — they bind a receptor and trigger one specific signal. That is why there is no single peptide that 'does everything'. Each one does something narrow, and only a few have strong clinical evidence.
In plain English
- By convention, short chains are called peptides — around 50 amino acids is the usual rule of thumb — but it is not an exact scientific cutoff and it overlaps with small proteins.
- Their typical job is to deliver an instruction: release this hormone, lower appetite, repair here.
- Some are approved medicines. Others have only been studied in cells or animals.
- Usefulness depends on the specific peptide and the specific goal, not on the category.
What we know
- Several peptides are approved, heavily studied drugs — semaglutide and tirzepatide for weight and type 2 diabetes, for example.

- Most 'research' peptides have no large human clinical trials.
