Why can a GLP-1 stop working like it did at first?
Updated: 2026-09-09 · GLP-1 and weight
Short answer
A plateau, or satiety that feels weaker, does not prove the medicine stopped working. Several factors can contribute at once: energy expenditure falls as weight falls, the perception of satiety habituates, intake and activity context shifts, and clinical or product-side factors exist too. Telling them apart takes follow-up, not assumptions.
In plain English
- Metabolic adaptation: less weight, lower resting expenditure.
- Perception habituation: satiety is no longer novel.
- Intake and activity context: it can change without being the main explanation.
- Product and storage per its labeling, plus other medical factors or medications.
What we know
- Weight plateaus are well described in every weight-loss intervention.
- Clinical follow-up is what decides any treatment adjustment.
What we don't know yet
- How much each factor contributes in an individual case without objective intake and activity data.
