What is BPC-157 and why do so many people talk about it for recovery?
Updated: 2026-09-09 · Recovery: BPC-157 and TB-500
Short answer
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide derived from a sequence found in gastric juice. It became popular because animal models showed striking effects on tissue healing, tendon and gut lining. The uncomfortable part is that nearly all of that evidence is preclinical: in humans there are only a few small, uncontrolled pilot studies, and the FDA has flagged potential safety risks for compounded BPC-157 products.
In plain English
- Origin: a fragment related to a gastric protective protein.
- Reputation: favourable rodent results in healing and connective tissue.
- Humans: uncontrolled pilot studies, not large trials.
- Status: not an approved medicine for these uses.
What we know
- There is a consistent body of preclinical studies with favourable animal-model results: a 2025 systematic review gathered 35 preclinical studies and a single qualifying clinical study.
- It is not approved as a treatment for human injuries.
What we don't know yet
- Whether animal effects translate to humans, and at what magnitude.
- Long-term safety profile in people.
