Why does a systematic review carry more weight than a single study?

Short answer

A systematic review searches for every study on a question using a declared method and appraises them. A meta-analysis goes further and combines their results into one estimate. These usually give a steadier picture than a single study, but they are only as good as the studies they include.

  • A meta-analysis weights each study, usually by its precision.
  • If the included studies are small or biased, the summary inherits that problem.

  • Publication bias — unpublished negative studies — can tilt the summary and is not always detectable.
