Why do peptides come as a freeze-dried powder instead of ready-made liquid?

Updated: 2026-09-09 · Reconstitution and syringes

Short answer

Lyophilisation freezes the product and removes water by sublimation under vacuum. Without water, the reactions that degrade a peptide run far more slowly, so powder stores and ships better than a solution. It is a standard preservation technique; it says nothing about the identity, purity or sterility of the contents.

In plain English

  • Water speeds up hydrolysis and other degradation routes; removing it slows them.
  • That is why many biologic medicines are also supplied freeze-dried.
  • The powder can look different: a compact cake, a thin film, or loose powder.
  • Melted, caked powder or liquid inside a sealed vial is a reason to distrust the product.

What we know

  • Lyophilisation is a standard, well-documented way to stabilise proteins and peptides.
  • Approved freeze-dried products carry specific storage conditions in their labels.

What we don't know yet

  • Being lyophilised says nothing about how long that specific product lasts.
  • Most research-labelled products publish no stability data of their own.

Always follow the manufacturer's storage instructions for the specific product. No universal rules are given here.
